Many layers were used to simulate ground, fire, moon, and reflections. An overlay of painted organza gives a smoky appearance. Some of the flame and leaves are under the netting, some are over, with the overlaid leaves having loose, cutout and curved edges.
The piece won 2nd place in South Mississippi Art Association 29th Annual show, 2005; 2nd place in Pine Belt Quilters 11th Biennial show, October 2006, Hattiesburg, MS. Exhibited in “Quilt the Swamp” January 2007 at the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, Baton Rouge, LA.
Campfire was displayed in "Nature of the West: Contemporary Quilts" at the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Baker City, Oregon, July 1-September 3, 2007. Quoting the brochure, “The exhibit features non-traditional quilts that depict the natural beauty of the West--glimpses of what might have been seen along the Oregon Trail - from awe-inspiring landscapes to the majesty of wildflowers.
"Oregon Trail pioneers often commented on the new and wonderful sights they encountered along the trail. This show continues the pioneer tradition of finding inspiration in natural surroundings.” The Center is a division of the US Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management.
